Daily Meditation 3.28.2010

If I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall. I would go to more dances. I would ride more merry-go-rounds. I would pick more daisies.

Today’s Meditation:

I would have more fun, too. I can think of many things that I’d spend less time doing, such as thinking negative thoughts, and many things that I’d spend more time on, such as hiking and spending time with friends. If I had my life to do over, I wouldn’t spend as much money as I’ve spent on some things, and I’d spend it on other things.

But wait–who says I don’t have my life to live over? Personally, I see my life as a long series of chapters, and many of those chapters are long gone. There are, however, chapters in the future, and how will I live those? What will I do with the days left to me? Will that be any different than what I’ve done with the days past?

I hope so. I hope that the first chapters in my life have been spent learning lessons that I’ll be able to put into practice in the final chapters of my life. Today definitely is the first day of the rest of my life, so I have many things that I can do with my life between now and the last day. I don’t have to commit myself to a ton of responsibilities, and I don’t have to follow the “rules” in everything I do. Maybe I can’t find a merry-go-round to ride, but I can sit on a nice park bench and enjoy the scenery.

We choose how to live each day, and we choose the type of person we want to be. Unfortunately, we often choose the type of person that we think others want to see rather than the person we truly are, and that prevents us from going barefoot early in the spring or spending time picking daisies when we could be “being productive.” The rest of my life stretches out before me–which person will I be during that lifetime?

The art of life lies in a constant readjustment to our surroundings.
